Linux 2.6.6
Linux is a clone of the Unix kernel, written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers across the Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single UNIX Specification compliance. It has all the features you would expect in a modern fully-fledged Unix kernel, including true multitasking, virtual memory, shared libraries, demand loading, shared copy-on-write executables, proper memory management, and TCP/IP networking.
Changes: NTFS, XFS, reiserfs, and ACPI were updated. Some
small virtual memory patches. Various architecture
updates and lots of fixes were made. ext2 and ext3
filesystem performance was significantly improved.
The "laptop mode" patch was added. POSIX message
queues, 4KB stacks for the i386 architecture,
non-executable stack support for several
architectures, the lightweight auditing framework,
the "completely fair queueing" I/O scheduler, TCP
"Vegas" congestion avoidance, and many more
features were implemented.
